I met with Paul Tarnowski, Director of Platen and Design and Print to discuss his wallpaper printing business in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, which specialises in digital wallpaper for shorter runs to a vast range of designers and businesses.

Paul has worked in the wallpaper industry for over 30 years, both in Lancashire and USA. He oversaw the CAD department at Graham & Brown for 16 years, and is highly skilled in colour separation and digital print.

A few years ago he set up Platen Design and Print to focus on providing digital printing for wallcoverings for independent companies who were having difficulty placing an order with wallpaper manufacturers with large minimum runs.

Situated within Market Chambers, Ramsbottom, Paul’s family is also experienced within the wallpaper industry, with his sister running a wallpaper distribution company, and his wife a wallpaper designer.

Clients can order a minimum of 8 rolls with sampling, pantone colour references on a range of substrates, within a 10 day maximum turnaround.

Platen Design and Print, also have an in house design brand Trompe L’oeil Wallpaper which specialises in three dimensional print wallcoverings in wallpaper and murals to give effects such as brick, wood, stone or tin.

Platen Design and Print, like most wallpaper manufacturers, use AVA CAD/ CAM software to design and reproduce wallpaper repeats, easily separating patterns into multiple colourways for clients. Paul showed me how efficient and simple the software in making changes easily and quickly, creating visualisations for customers. This was really interesting to see. It is light years away from creating repeats in Photoshop!

Thanks to Paul Tarnowski and Platen Design and Print for their time and generosity on my visit.
